Health Insurance for the Self Employed

By finance-editor - Posted on 29 April 2008

Health insurance is a major issue that is on the minds of millions of people all over the world. This is in part to the skyrocketing costs of medical treatment and the decision of many companies to no longer offer the health insurance to their employees. So it is easy to see why so many people are worried about health insurance and the large amount of money that it usually costs to have with a regular job.

Then you have to consider the issue of those brave souls that are self employed. Are they to be left out in the cold? The fact is that getting health insurance for self employed people is not the easiest thing in the world to accomplish. This is due in part to the fact that a lot of health insurance companies are not excited about taking a risk on someone who is not employed by a large corporation. Why? Well the answer is simple. The health insurance companies are out to make money and they run the risk of a person not being able to pay when they are self employed and left to their own devices for the earning of income. So you see that the insurance companies are not all that willing to be involved in such a risk.

The other issue is the fact that there are insurance companies out there that are willing to take the risk but then they want to charge a large premium for this type of policy. So that creates another issue. It may not be possible for the person that is seeking the insurance to make the large payments that the company wants. Again, they have no health insurance even though they may have a proven track record of income that could more than provide stability for a lower premium.

There is some good news in this whole deal. There are some companies that are now offering a policy of low cost health insurance for the self employed and that means a lot of good things to a lot of people. Most often these companies require at least two years of being in business and then proof of positive income for those two years or more. They will then craft a policy that helps the self employed person by providing health insurance at a much reduced rate. This is the best thing to happen in the industry for a long time.
